Real Madrid sells TV rights to Mediapro for 1.1bln euros
Spanish first division soccer team Real Madrid has sold the rights to the next six seasons of its matches to Catalan media group Mediapro, for 1.1 billion euros (1.32 billion U.S. dollars), the team said in a Monday statement.
The governing board said the deal was a "historic milestone" in the statement, issued after a special board meeting.
The team chose Mediapro because it offered the highest price and the strongest income guarantees, the statement said. The Audiovisual Sport (AC) company owns most of the rights Spain's first and second division games. AC is owned by Sogecable and Mediapro.
Monday's contract guarantees Real Madrid at least 150 million euros (180 million U.S. dollars) a year. Mediapro signed a similar contract with Barcelona in late spring; splitting some of the pay-per-view rights with Sogecable, and transmitting the remainder on its own channel La Sexta.
